Famous for its waterfall trail, this village owes its name to the noble Brusati family, who already dominated the rolling green hills between Lake Iseo and the lower Trompia Valley in the 11th century. The small historic centre is clustered around the Church of Saints Tirso and Emiliano, but the municipality extends to the nearby hamlets and hills, where the elegant residential neighbourhoods are located.
WHAT TO SEE
Church of Saints Tirso and Emiliano – Nestled in the tranquility of Calzana’s hamlet, it is one of the oldest places in town. Its origins date back to the 13th century, but the current building dates to the 18th century and is striking for its elegant simplicity: a harmonious façade, four side chapels, and an interior that conveys peace and spirituality. An ideal stop for those who love sacred art and timeless atmospheres.
Church of San Zenone – Overlooking an enchanting panorama, this church is perfect for those seeking silence and beauty. Built in 1713 on an older structure, it is a little gem that combines art, history, and nature. Its discreet charm makes it an ideal place for a contemplative break or a stroll outside the city centre.
Sanctuary of Madonna della Rosa – A fairytale place, immersed in the woods on a panoramic promontory, linked to a legend according to which the Virgin Mary appeared to a farmer, causing a rose garden to bloom in the midst of drought. The church still preserves a simple ancient structure, with a precious fresco depicting the Madonna and Child. Perfect for those who love spirituality, nature, and a touch of mystery.
Remo Bianco Contemporary Art Museum – A touch of modernity among the historic hills of Monticelli Brusati, the museum collects works by one of the most original artists of the second half of the 20th century in Italy. Through unconventional materials, innovative techniques, and evocative installations, it offers a journey into the heart of contemporary creativity. An excellent opportunity to discover art in an unusual and stimulating context.
WALKS AND EXCURSIONS
Gaina Waterfalls Trail – For those who enjoy walking in nature, the Gaina Waterfalls Trail — one of the most spectacular spots in Monticelli Brusati — is an experience not to be missed. This circular route of approximately 4 kilometres winds through shady woodland, past thundering waterfalls and into a narrow gorge carved over centuries by the flowing stream. The trail is accessible throughout the year, although spring and summer are the best seasons to fully appreciate its natural beauty. It is not recommended in rainy conditions, as some sections may be slippery. Parts of the route are equipped with chains, cables and metal pegs, so proper hiking footwear is strongly advised. The walk begins in Gaina, the highest hamlet in the municipality, which can be easily reached by car. After parking in one of the free parking areas along the road, follow the white and pink signs marked “SC” down to the stream. Here the trail splits into two alternatives: an expert route, more adventurous and fun (also suitable for children when accompanied by adults), and variant B, an easier and quieter option that winds through the woods and runs above the stream.
Hike to the Sanctuary of Madonna della Rosa – The route winds through fields, woods, and vineyards, offering evocative natural views and traces of local history. Along the way, you can admire the Church of San Zenone, dating back to the 15th century, and the remains of the Castle of Monticelli. You then reach the Sanctuary of Madonna della Rosa, dating back to the 15th century, in a panoramic position overlooking the plain. The route passes through ancient hamlets, including Villa and Calchera, and encounters historic buildings such as a medieval crenellated tower. Nature, spirituality and artistic treasures intertwine in a fascinating loop. You can start from the Villa sports centre. The circular route is 8 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours to complete.
