- Provaglio d’Iseo
Dating back to pre-Roman times, the town developed along an important route linking Brescia to the Camonica Valley. Its origins and growth are closely tied to the presence of the Cluniac Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa, founded in the 11th century. The municipality stretches at the foot of Monte Cognolo and includes two hamlets: Fantecolo, known for the elegant Villa Fenaroli, and Provezze, home to the sumptuous Soncini Palace and Villa Gussalli.
WHAT TO SEE
Francesconi Palace – Originally built in the late Middle Ages, the palace took on its current horse- shoe-shaped layout, inspired by Palladian villas: a central residential block flanked by two wings that were once used for agricultural storage. Today, Francesconi Palace serves as the Town Hall.
Sanctuary of Madonna del Corno – Located on Monte Cognolo at an altitude of 427 metres, this church is a symbol of Provaglio d’Iseo and overlooks the town, offering a particularly beautiful view of the monastery, the Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve and the entire Franciacorta morainic amphitheater.
Oldofredi Castle and Church of San Rocco – The castle and church are situated along the path to the Sanctuary of Madonna del Corno and form part of an ancient fortified refuge dating back to the early Middle Ages, once owned by the Oldofredi family of Iseo. Surrounded by cypress trees, the well-preserved church and the square “caneve” — small stone buildings formerly used as cellars or barns — are still visible on the site.
Church of San Bernardo – Open for cultural events and concerts, this simple and cozy little church is often chosen as a wedding venue by couples looking for an intimate and authentic location. The interior has a single nave and houses 15th- and 16th-century frescoes, which were brought to light in the 1990s during restoration work.
HIGHLIGHTS
Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa – Founded in 1083, this complex is the oldest Cluniac foundation in the area. Today, the monastery is a cultural and spiritual destination of great interest. It attracts thousands of visitors every year, drawn by its history, panoramic location and the charm of its ancient frescoes. It is also an important starting point for visiting the Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve, which can be admired from the churchyard terrace.
WALKS AND EXCURSIONS
Hiking on Monte Cognolo – From the centre of the village, several paths and mule tracks lead to Monte Cognolo, whose summit (673 m) can be reached in an hour and a half. However, the most popular destination remains the Sanctuary of Madonna del Corno, with a panoramic terrace offering a spectacular view from above the monastery and nature reserve.
Walk in the Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve – Parking is available in the designated area in front of the Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa. From here, you can access the southern route, which offers two circular walks of approximately 4.5 km and 9 km. Both routes are completely flat and suitable for children. The Tor-biere Nature Reserve is open year-round; a ticket costing €2 per person can be purchased at the machines at the start of the trail. Please note that dogs and bicycles are not allowed.
La Via delle Sorelle – Provaglio d’iseo is part of the second and third stages of La Via delle Sorelle, a 130-kilometre path connecting the cities of Brescia and Bergamo, which were jointly celebrated in 2023 as Italian Capital of Culture.
Cultural Cycle Route Bergamo – Brescia – Inaugurated in 2023, a legacy of the Capital of Cul-ture, it traces a cycle path that runs from Bergamo to the shores of Lake Iseo and Franciacorta, before arriving in Brescia.
