Cima Cologne Monte Orfano

Cologne

Nestled at the foot of Mount Orfano, Cologne boasts origins that date back to Roman times. The first settlement, known as “Colonie”, took its name from the Latin “Colognis”. This ancient heritage is still visible today: the municipal banner proudly bears the inscription “Colonia”, a lasting testament to the deep historical roots and cultural identity of the area.

WHAT TO SEE

Piazza Garibaldi – The heart of the town’s social life, the square captivates visitors with its harmonious layout, reminiscent of the ancient Greek agora. Still today, it serves as a vibrant meeting place and a venue for cultural events, making it the perfect starting point for exploring Cologne.
Parish Church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio – Overlooking Piazza Garibaldi, the church is a jewel of sacred art, built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Inside, you can admire a richly frescoed ceiling. Next to the church stands the ancient bell tower, once used as a prison.
Church of the Disciplina (Parish Church of San Lorenzo) – Next to the parish church stands a treasure of faith and art, probably built in the 16th century. Inside, the altarpiece is a fine example of sacred art.
Suardi-Martinelli Palace – Now serving as the Town Hall, the 17th-century Palazzo Suardi-Martinelli preserves precious fresco fragments from the 15th century. This hidden gem of art and history can be visited for free on weekends, by reservation.
Castle – In the centre of Cologne, you come across a fascinating architectural complex owned by the Gnecchi family, entrepreneurs from Milano who were active between the 19th and 20th centuries. The oldest part of the complex is the castle, dating to the 12th century and still retaining cellars, a portico, a well, and a courtyard that evoke a medieval atmosphere.

HIGHLIGHTS

Passoni Gnecchi Palace – Just a few steps from Piazza Garibaldi stands the elegant Palazzo Passoni Gnecchi, where art, history, and nature blend in perfect harmony. Through its evocative portico, you enter the main hall, where walls come alive with mythological scenes and rural landscapes inspired by Lake Iseo, while the ceiling portrays a young Apollo on Olympus, in ariot of colors and classical symbols. Continuing toward the entrance hall, you reach the inner courtyard and park — an oasis of tranquility and beauty that stretches up the slopes of Monte Orfano. The palace is open for free visits by reservation.
Civic Educational Museum – In the heart of Piazza Garibaldi, the Civic Educational Museum will reopen in spring 2026. Designed to tell the story of Cologne’s identity, it is organized into three thematic sections and collects materials, objects, artifacts, and documents that bear witness to the life, traditions, and historical evolution of the town and its inhabitants.

WALKS AND EXCURSIONS

Cologne-Coccaglio Cycle and Pedestrian Path – For those who love walking, cycling, and discovering the area at a slower pace, one of the most enjoyable experiences is the cycle and pedestrian path that connects Cologne to Coccaglio: an easy route that winds through tidy vineyards and rural views, right at the foot of Monte Orfano. Along the route, there are plenty of family-run wineries, where you can taste local wines and learn about the work of local producers. Tours are available by reservation
Hiking on Monte Orfano – For hiking enthusiasts, Monte Orfano offers a variety of routes to suit different levels. You can follow the gentle, scenic panoramic road linking Cologne to the neighbouring villages, or choose the upper and lower trails, which feature more challenging sections and lead to the Rifugio degli Alpini, as well as the striking Sentiero delle Tre Croci.
