Piazza Cavour Rovato

Rovato

Known as the capital of Franciacorta, Rovato’s history is deeply intertwined with religious traditions and the culture of livestock farming. The nearby Monte Orfano was once a place of worship for ancient Gallic settlements and, from the time of Venetian rule, Rovato became home to one of northern Italy’s most important markets.

WHAT TO SEE

Piazza Cavour – Designed by Rodolfo Vantini, this is the beating heart of the city. Its elegant porticoed wings, inspired by an amphitheatre, embrace a cobbled square animated by shops, boutiques, and cafés, perfect for enjoying an aperitif. The majestic central arch leads to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, passing through Via Castello.
Town Hall– The Town Hall, built in stages between the 13th and 15th centuries, houses beautifully decorated rooms on the first floor, including the Piano Room and the Council Chamber. As tradition has it, part of the building was the home of the famous painter Moretto.
Rovato’s Castle – In the Middle Ages, the town of Rovato was fortified, leaving clear signs in the current historic centre and in its urban structure. The cylindrical towers of the castle still remain visible when walking along the “ramparts”.
Sanctuary of Santo Stefano – Nestled at the foot of Monte Orfano since the Lombard era, it was founded as a ministry to welcome wayfarers. The interior houses a precious cycle of frescoes, with vivid colours that enhance this sacred space with a vibrant, evocative atmosphere.
Church and Convent of Santissima Annunciata – Founded in 1449 on the summit of Monte Orfano, the complex dominates the moraine amphitheatre of Franciacorta. The small church is always open to visitors, while the convent, now a charming accommodation facility, opens by appointment for guided tours of the historic rooms.

HIGHLIGHTS

Manzo all’Olio di Rovato – A true taste of Franciacorta’s culinary heritage, beef slowly cooked in olive oil is a traditional peasant recipe that has become an iconic local specialty. The meat is tender and flavorful, simmered with garlic and anchovies to create a rich, aromatic sauce. Best savoured in the cozy trattorias of the historic center, it is a dish that captures the heart of the region’s gastronomy.

THINGS TO DO AND EVENTS

Urban Trekking – A cultural walk that takes place once a year, in October, to raise awareness of the historical roots of the town.

La Vigna Storica – Every April, a charming retro event brings together sport, local culture, and tradition. Participants ride vintage bicycles dressed in classic woolen attire, cycling through the vineyards and scenic back roads of Franciacorta — a unique experience that celebrates both the region and its heritage.
Lombardia Carne – One of the most important livestock fairs in Northern Italy, this event celebrates the excellence of Lombard meat products and takes place 15 days before Easter, featuring events, exhibitions, and tastings for visitors of all ages.
Pour Parler Festival – A summer festival that combines culture, music and territory: meetings with authors, wine tastings, DJ sets and walks through the vineyards make each edition a unique multisensory experience.

WALKS AND EXCURSIONS
