The municipality of Passirano, with its two charming hamlets (Camignone and Monterotondo) and the small village of Valenzano, is immersed in the green countryside of Franciacorta, among rolling hills and well-tended vineyards. The municipality still retains the atmosphere of an ancient village, thanks to its historic villas framed by centuries-old walls. Camignone is a small gem surrounded by vineyards, perfect for those who love tranquillity. Here, you will find ancient buildings such as Villa Giordani and Villa Ducco Catturich, dating back to the 14th century, and the picturesque centre of Contrada Barboglio, dating back to the 16th century. Monterotondo, as its name suggests, stands on a panoramic hill. Among the places to visit is the small church of San Giorgio, built in the 15th century on the ruins of a medieval castle destroyed in 1153. Valenzano charms with its simplicity: a small group of stone houses, which tell the story of centuries of rural life, including the Romanesque Church of Sant’Alessandro.
WHAT TO SEE
Passirano Castle – An absolute icon of the municipality, the castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Franciacorta. Built purely for defensive purposes, it still has a perfectly legible structure, with a quadrangular shape and surrounded by crenellated walls, among which stands the majestic keep tower, which gives the entire complex an imposing and fascinating aura. The castle cannot be visited inside, but it can be enjoyed from the outside during a walk or a tour through the vineyards, and it is a highlight for anyone exploring the area.
Villa Fassati Barba – In front of the castle stands Villa Fassati Barba, an elegant noble residence built between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The villa is surrounded by a splendid Italian garden and an orchard with cen-turies-old trees and ornamental plants of great value, which create a very romantic atmosphere. Privately owned like the castle, today it is an exclusive location for weddings, events and receptions.
Church of San Zenone – Once the parish church of Passirano, the Church of San Zenone is now one of the most fascinating medieval sites to visit, thanks to a recent and careful restoration that has brought to light the original beauty of the frescoes by Antonio Guadagnini and his school. The interior is striking for its intimate atmosphere and the historical and artistic value of its decorations. As for popular devotion, there is a precious collection of 50 wooden votive tablets dedicated to the Madonna dell’Abito. An ideal stop for lovers of sacred art and small churches that tell great stories.
Villa Catturich Ducco in Camignone – The villa is privately owned and not open to the public, but it remains an important example of the historical and artistic heritage of Franciacorta, visible at least from the out- side during a walk through the village of Camignone. It is a fascinating architectural complex that tells the story of over four centuries of history, from the 15th to the 19th century, bearing witness to the evolution of taste and style over time.
Church of San Lorenzo – Perched on a slight hill in the hamlet of Camignone, the Church of San Lorenzo welcomes visitors with a spectacular staircase connecting the large churchyard, set on two levels. The elegant façade, embellished with four Ionic columns and a refined marble portal, anticipates a bright and harmonious interior, with barrel vaults and side chapels housing works of art.
