Along the ancient road between Brescia and Milan, Erbusco was a strategic stopover with an ancient parish church and a fortified village. The historic centre and the surrounding countryside are home to elegant palaces built from the 16th century onwards by the most important aristocratic families of the area. Today, Erbusco is a lively town, known especially for its wine. Indeed, the Franciacorta Consortium and the Franciacorta Wine Route are located here. Renowned wineries and charming accommodations make it an ideal destination for holidays focused on relaxation and excellence.
WHAT TO SEE
Lechi Palace – It is the most prestigious private building in Erbusco, originally commissioned by Cesare Martinengo between the 16th and 17th centuries. Set in a panoramic position among the Chardonnay vineyards, its elegant internal courtyard with porticoes on three sides makes it a unique building. During the Second World War, it housed important works of art, including paintings from the Brera Art Gallery and the famous “Màcc de le ùre” from the Clock Tower of Brescia.
The castle and the drawbridge – Probably the oldest castle in Franciacorta, it dates back to before the year 1000 and preserves traces of its original medieval structure. Once surrounded by a deep moat, it enclosed the fortified village and the Parish Church of Santa Maria. To the north, two tower houses can be seen, while to the south the long body of the castle stands out, with the 14th- century drawbridge that leads to the parish church square.
Parish Church of Santa Maria Maggiore – Nestled within the old castrum, the Parish Church of Santa Maria is one of Erbusco’s hidden treasures. Originally built in the 12th century atop a pre-Romanesque sacred site, it combines Romanesque and Renaissance elements. Deconsecrated in the 19th century, the building was used as a theatre, storage space, and even a shelter during the Great War, before being restored and reopened for worship in the 1920s. Its apse still preserves valuable frescoes. As the village expanded, the new Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta was constructed, its imposing façade overlooking the old town, complemented by an elegant and picturesque staircase.
Former Convent of San Bernardino – Of the ancient convent founded in 1465, only a few original elements remain today including the portico with three arches supported by columns made of Sarnico stone. The church, with a single nave and simple architecture, conserves 16th-century frescoes of considerable interest. It is open daily, from dawn to dusk.
