THE PROJECT
The Oglio Green Trail winds almost entirely along the River Oglio and some of its irrigation channels (or ‘seriole’), passing through a typical lowland river landscape and favouring dirt tracks and country lanes.
From Paratico/Sarnico station, follow the provincial road towards Iseo until you reach the first roundabout, where you turn onto Via XXV Aprile. Shortly afterwards, turn right onto Via Della Santa, which leads to Via Don Giacomo Moioli and then to Via San Pietro. After a few hundred metres, take a downhill road which crosses the Palazzolo–Paratico tourist railway via a small bridge and, immediately afterwards, the entrance to the Fusia irrigation channel.
From here to Palazzolo, the route follows the right bank of the Fusia, accessible via a small gate reserved for pedestrians. Before reaching the historic Capriolo NK cotton mill, the path passes under the railway line twice; in some sections, the railway runs parallel to the route. Once past the cotton mill, you cross a small stream and continue along the same bank.
You then cross the Capriolo–Castelli Calepio provincial road at the hamlet of Castel de’ Conti, on the Bergamo side, which is well worth a brief detour. Continuing on, you pass under the large viaduct of the Milan–Venice motorway. The path then descends towards the river near the Italcementi dam and continues along a dirt track running alongside the former Ferrari cotton mill.
Once you have passed the disused building, turn right onto a short stretch of path leading to a flight of steps with direct access to the river. A gate leads into Parco delle Robinie, which has a café and a picnic area. At the park exit, you reach Piazza Giovanni XXIII: from here, turning left, in about ten minutes you arrive at Palazzolo railway station, the starting or finishing point of the Sentiero della Franciacorta, which, in two stages, leads to the Santuario della Stella in Gussago and to Brescia (Urago Mella). Continuing straight on, however, you arrive at Piazza Roma, in the centre of Palazzolo sull’Oglio.
HOW TO GET THERE AND WHERE TO PARK
Follow the signs for Lake Iseo until you reach Paratico. The starting point of the route is at Paratico station, near the bridge linking Sarnico and Paratico. There is a pay-and-display car park near the station, on Via Roma.
USEFUL INFORMATION
Attention: in some sections, the path becomes narrow, particularly where the bank drops steeply down to the river. Trains run only at weekends during the summer; however, it is important not to cross the tracks.
