Located just outside Brescia, Castegnato owes its name to an ancient chestnut grove that once extended south of the village. Nestled in a flat landscape, rich in water and fertile soil, the area has always had an agricultural vocation \u2013 particularly for the cultivation of wheat. Today, alongside the rural tradition, important industrial, artisanal, and commercial centres have also developed, making it a dynamic and growing town.<\/p>\n
Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista<\/strong> \u2013 This church represents the spiritual heart of the town. It was built in 1685 next to an earlier fifteenth-century structure. Although dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the current patron saint is Saint Vitale, whose relics are kept inside the church and whose feast day is solemnly celebrated every 25 years. The fa\u00e7ade, completed in 1724, is enriched with Baroque details, including the evocative portal with the statue of Saint John the Baptist, attributed to Antonio Callegari. Inside, important works of art can be admired: the Main Altarpiece with the Holy Family and Saints Anthony of Padua and Vitale, the canvas of the Imposition of the Name of Jesus (1804), both by Sante Cattaneo, and the Twelve Apostles, depicted full-length, by Angelo Paglia (1714). \nHistoric mansions: Villa Baitella and Villa Calini<\/strong> \u2013 Although not open to visitors, these private residences tell the noble history of Castegnato. Villa Baitella belonged to the Baitelli family, wealthy merchants from Bergamo who moved to Franciacorta in the 14th century. It later passed to the Martinengo Cesaresco family, one of the most important noble families of Brescia, whose coat of arms is still visible on the southern fa\u00e7ade. Villa Calini, from the 18th century, is located along the road leading from the parish church to the cemetery. \nSan Vitale’s cake <\/strong>\u2013 This dessert is the gastronomic symbol of Castegnato: a crispy shortcrust pastry filled with almond frangipane cream and covered with a delicious hazelnut praline. Created by Pasticceria Sinigaglia, a point of reference for artisanal quality and established for generations. Founded in 1961, the shop is still run with passion by Umberto, assisted by his son Matteo, both guardians of local flavour and tradition.
