Linked to the noble family that originally owned it, Palazzo Pulusella later passed to the Congregation of Apostolic Charity and, finally, in 1911, to the Mazzola family.<\/p>\n
The building’s architectural merit is immediately apparent from the street, onto which the imposing main fa\u00e7ade faces. The surface of the elevation wall is almost entirely concealed by plaster, with the exception of a strip at ground level, where the masonry is left unfinished, revealing the highly varied masonry components, constructed of a variety of materials, stone and brick.<\/p>\n
The division into two floors is emphasized by the openings, two rows of overlapping, unadorned windows. The decorative aspect of the fa\u00e7ade, instead, is constituted by the large entrance portal, flanked by pilasters and corbels supporting a projecting mixtilinear cornice, and by a series of corbels on the coping, below the eaves, which features an eccentric motif of masks with varying expressions. Other masks, with roughly-defined features and their heads crowned with leaves of various plants, appear in the decorative band under the eaves, between one corbel and the next, corresponding to the attic windows, with traces of polychromy. The eaves are closed at the corners by talamones.<\/p>\n
The predilection for anthropomorphic protomes, in stucco and tempera, is a distinctive motif of the residence and we do not know whether this choice is due to the apotropaic function of these images or whether, more likely, it should not be considered a legacy of a typical Mannerist decoration, which came into vogue in Lombardy after the great experiments of Giulio Romano at Palazzo Te and was extremely widespread in frescoes and sculptures of noble residences of the 16th and 17th centuries.<\/p>\n
From the entrance, an elegant hallway with a corbeled stucco ceiling leads to the end of a portico, with low arches set on Tuscan-style columns and cross vaults, now partially closed by a glass window.<\/p>\n
But the palace’s true treasure lies in the decorations preserved in its interior rooms, starting on the ground floor, where the vaulted ceiling of the main hall features a fine Baroque stucco decoration, with figures of cherubs and foliage enlivening the ceiling corbels, while the fireplace is surmounted by draperies and a crest. The stucco is repeated in two other vaulted rooms, with frescoes of biblical scenes, and on the vault of the staircase leading to the upper floor, where the splendidly decorated gallery is located. The eighteenth-century ceiling, with exposed beams, is completely painted, like the ceiling of the room overlooking the street, with woodwork decorated with symmetrical architectural motifs and a continuous band running beneath the ceiling, featuring plant shoots and foliage.
